The Tarot is more than a simple deck of cards. The deck itself comprises 78 cards which combine to form the 'arcana' - symbolic representations of ancient wisdom. Twenty two of these are the 'Major Arcana'. The Major Arcana have pictures that depict such things as the Magician, Empress, Emperor, Magician, Hierophant, Hanged man, Justice just to name a few.
The 56 'Minor' cards are split into the four elemental suits of Earth, Water, Fire and Air more commonly known as Pentacles,. Cups, Wands and Swords, and similar to spades, hearts and diamonds in a regular deck of cards. The Minor Arcana cards resemble a regular deck of cards except for the inclusion of The Page as a face card. So we have Ace to Ten, then Page, Knight, Queen and King. Sounds familiar now, doesn't it?
Arcana is latin for the word secret.
So you ask, how can randomly drawn cards have any relevance to someone's life and what's happening in it? The Tarot can make you aware about all the choices you have. The cards don't tell you what you should do or what specifically is going to happen in your future, but rather the possibilities depending on the path you take. Your path is determined by the choices you make every single day. Even not making a choice, is in fact, a choice.
The above shows a sampling of 4 tarot cards, from left to right, Ace of Wands, Ace of Swords. Ace of Cups and Ace of Pentacles. Every brand name of deck will have their own pictures, but the theme is basically the same. So, because of this a reader can easily go from one deck brand name to another deck brand name.
